![]() ![]() ![]() Given the 80-foot buffer needed to safely transport the Shuttle, certain street fixtures and overhead lines required temporary removal. The street cross sections along the route ranged in width from 70 feet to 90 feet curb face to curb face. The team verified the proposed route and documented all of the temporary clearance work needed along the busy 12-mile urban corridor from LAX through the cities of Inglewood and Los Angeles. A large collaboration of team members which included the California Science Center, Cordoba Corporation, Parsons, Valley Crest, the cities of Los Angeles and Inglewood, and other experts, spent 18 months preparing for Endeavour’s complex journey. To make way for the massive orbiter, utility overhead lines, street lights, traffic signals and trees were moved and subsequently restored. Space Shuttle Endeavour is approximately 122 feet long, with a wingspan of 78 feet, and a height of 58 feet to the top of its tail. The transport of the space shuttle to its new home at the California Science Center on October 12-14 2012 marked its 26th and final mission. The Space Shuttle Endeavour, a $1.7 billion spaceship that flew 25 missions, was developed and built in Southern California 20 years ago.
